What Is a Magick Charm Bag?
Magick charm bags—sometimes called spell bags, sachets, or talisman pouches—are small bundles of intention, filled with herbs, crystals, symbols, and sometimes a written spell or sigil. In many Wiccan and neopagan traditions, they’re used to focus and carry the energy of a specific goal—whether it’s for protection, prosperity, love, clarity, or spiritual connection.
Charm bags are one of my favorite types of spellwork. There’s something so grounding and satisfying about holding your intention in your hands, layering each element with care, and knowing you’ve created something magickal and meaningful. Whether tucked into a purse, placed under a pillow, tucked inside your bra (yes, really), or resting on your altar, these little pouches carry big energy.
Whether you're seeking clarity, protection, abundance, or love, a charm bag is a beautiful way to channel your energy and keep your spellwork close. It’s one of the simplest yet most sacred ways to infuse your everyday life with magick.
A Bit of Charm Bag History
The use of charm bags, spell pouches, and amulets stretches back thousands of years and across many cultures. In ancient Egypt, small pouches of herbs and stones were carried as talismans for health or protection. The Greeks and Romans used similar bundles in temple rituals, and medieval European folk magic often included sachets filled with herbs, bones, or prayers.
In many traditions, charm bags are created with conscious intent, honoring the elemental correspondences of each ingredient and often crafted during specific moon phases or Sabbats. While the details vary, the essence remains the same: a personal, portable container of power, crafted by hand and infused with spirit.
How to Create a Magick Charm Bag
For me, creating a charm bag begins long before I gather the herbs, crystals or fabric and continues long after I tie the string. It begins with a pause—a quiet moment to listen to what I truly need. Do I want to call something in? Let something go? Strengthen a part of myself? Support a goal?
That’s where I always start: with intention.
Set Your Intention
Everything in magick begins with intention. It’s the energy that shapes your spell and the thread that ties all your ingredients together.
Ask yourself:
- What am I calling into my life?
- What do I want this charm bag to support me with?
- How do I want to feel when I carry or use it?
Your intention can be as focused as “I want to attract a new job opportunity,” or as open as “I want to feel more confident about sharing my opinion” Clarity helps, but honesty is most important. Write your intention down on a small piece of paper, or distill it into a single word or symbol you’ll include in your bag. (This is a great place to bring in sigil magick)
Choose Your Charm Bag Ingredients
In my training, a magick charm bags always include herbs in some form. But a magick charm bag is more than just herbs—it’s a collection of sacred elements, each chosen with care to support your intention. Begin by selecting your Enchanted Herbal Blend. This forms the energetic core of your charm bag, with each blend thoughtfully crafted to hold specific magickal correspondences—whether you're seeking protection, clarity, healing, confidence, or abundance.
From there, choose additional ingredients that resonate with your goal. You don’t need many—just what feels aligned and powerful for the work at hand. Consider adding:
A Crystal – such as amethyst for peace, citrine for manifestation, or rose quartz for love
A Symbolic Charm or Token – a key, moon, heart, or other object tied to your spell's focus
A Written Petition or Sigil – a word, phrase, or symbol that expresses your intention
A Personal Item (Optional) – some examples are; a charm, a coin, or meaningful piece of jewelry to link the bag to your energy
You'll also need a small drawstring pouch (or a square of natural fabric you can tie closed), and optionally, a candle or incense to help you create sacred space.
Once you've gathered your items, take a few quiet moments to center yourself and connect with your purpose. This is where the magick begins.
Create with Presence
With your ingredients gathered and your intention set, it’s time to begin crafting your charm bag. This is where you bring energy and physical form together—where your spell becomes something you can see, hold, and feel.
Begin by preparing your space. Light a candle or incense if you wish, take a few deep breaths, and speak your intention aloud. You’re stepping into sacred work now—let it be a moment of connection.
One by one, begin placing your chosen items into the pouch:
Add your herbal blend, letting the scent and texture draw you into the energy you're weaving.
Tuck in your crystal and symbolic charm, focusing on how each one supports your goal.
Fold and add your written intention or sigil, the spell’s voice made visible.
Include your personal token, if using, to link the spell to your unique vibration.
As you add each piece, speak or silently affirm your intention. You might say:
“With herbs and stone, with word and will,
This charm I craft, my dream fulfill.”
When everything is inside, draw the bag closed. Knot the string with purpose, sealing your spell with this chant;
“I tie this charm with clear intent,
Its magick flows where it is sent.”
Hold the finished charm bag between your palms, breathe into it, and envision it glowing with energy—alive with your magick.
Activate and Work With Your Charm Bag
Your charm bag is now assembled—but to fully awaken its magick, it needs to be activated with your energy.
Hold the bag between your palms. Close your eyes and focus your awareness on your intention. Breathe deeply. Feel the energy you've woven into each ingredient begin to rise and harmonize. You might visualize a glow of light building within the bag—warm, steady, and strong.
To activate and empower your charm, you can:
Whisper a blessing or chant to awaken its purpose
Pass it through incense smoke to raise its vibration
Hold it over candlelight or under moonlight to charge it with elemental energy
Press it gently to your heart or third eye to bind it with your own power
Speak words of affirmation, such as:
“By breath and will, by heart and hand,
This charm now lives at my command.
Bound with purpose, set to flight,
Guide my steps and guard my light.”
When it feels complete, trust that it is.
Now, keep the charm bag close. Carry it in your pocket or purse, place it beneath your pillow, tuck it into a drawer where you'll see it often, or set it on your altar. Let it be a quiet companion—offering support, reminding you of your intention, and radiating its energy into your daily life.
You can recharge the bag whenever needed by holding it again with fresh focus, repeating your spell, or placing it under moonlight or beside a charging crystal.
