Embracing Spring Equinox Energy

Wheel of the Year

Falling between March 20-23 in the Northern Hemisphere and often referred to as Ostara in witchy circles, the Spring Equinox is a time when light and dark, night and day, are in equal balance.  A liminal time, and the symbolically the beginning of spring on the Wheel of the Year, the Spring Equinox, or Ostara, is ideal for focusing on growth, fertility, birth and rebirth.

Celebrating the Equinox

Some of my favorite ways to celebrate this Sabbat take me outdoors.  If the weather is nasty, that outdoor time might be a quick open-armed embrace of the dawn.  If the weather is promising, I’ll spend the day spring-prepping my gardens.  Raking and clearing the yard.  Cleaning and filling bird feeders.  And my favorite activity, planting bulbs in anticipation of summer flowers.

One of the things I find most enjoyable about the fresh promise of the Spring Equinox energy, is getting my fingers in the dirt.  There is something so powerful in the visual assurance of growth that plants offer, especially when started from seeds.  But I have to admit, be it vegetables or flowers, I’ve rarely had great success growing plants from seeds all the way through harvest.  So when I plant my vegetable garden this spring, I’ll definitely plug those little starter plants into the dirt rather than hope seeds eventually grow into something I can use in my salsa.

Spring Equinox Magick

But as great as starter plants are for gardening, when it comes to magick, manifesting and spiritual workings, I reach for the seed packets.  They require more attention, more time and more special care.  And, at least in my experience, a little more magick.

As a simple, ongoing magickal ritual, I do bless seeds at Imbolc with specific energies, focused on a long-term spell I’m working to manifest.  As the seeds sprouted into wee lil seedlings, I feed them regularly with moon water that’s been charged for this spell. Now, as we approach Ostara, the seedlings are in a sun-lit flowerpot.  A Crystal Word plant stake accented with a moss agate crystal supports and energizes their burgeoning growth.  I’ll keep giving them all of that attention, care and magick they need until I can plant them outdoors this summer.

There are many other magicks and energies to embrace at the Spring Equinox.   Perhaps playing with seeds doesn’t appeal, but spring cleaning and refreshing space for new energy does. Abundance rituals, cleansing workings, or fertility spells all flourish with this Sabbat energy.
